Dr. Holger Backhaus-Maul
Dr. Holger Backhaus-Maul, Dipl. Soz., Mag. rer. publ., has studied sociology, public administration and social sciences at the University of Bielefeld, the German University for Administrative Sciences (Speyer) and the Humboldt University (Berlin); he was research assistent at the Center for Social Policy Research/Department „Theory and Constitution of the Welfare State“ at the University of Bremen (1989-1994); since 1995 he is a researcher and lecturer for Social Security and Welfare Politics, Public Administration and Organizational Theory at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg/Department of Educational Sciences.
He is a board member of the foundation „Aktive Bürgerschaft“ - the Corporate Citizenship Initiative of Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken in Germany (Berlin; http://www.aktive-buergerschaft.de ) and a nationwide assoziation of universities ("Education through Responsibility"/"Bildung durch Verantwortung"; http://www.bildung-durch-verantwortung.de ). He was an academic member of the advisory board for the second and third "Survey on Volunteerism" in Germany (http://www.bmfsfj.de/ . ) and the first "German Goverment Report on Volunteerism" (http://www.bmfsfj.de/BMFSFJ/engagementpolitik,did=152728.html . )
He is a Member of the German Association for Political Science/Deutsche Vereinigung für Politikwissenschaft (DVPW; https://www.dvpw.de/wir/profil/ziele.html ) and the German Society for Sociology/Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS; http://www.soziologie.de/de/die-dgs/ueber-die-dgs.html ).
His academic work about Service Learning with international students was honored by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (2011; http://www.stifterverband.info/wissenschaft_und_hochschule/hochschulperle/2011-02/index.html) and the State of Sachsen-Anhalt (2013; http://magazin.uni-halle.de/15519/international-engagiert-studiert-gewinnt-integrationspreis/ ).
He spent several years as for academic researches in the US and India.
