- 1995-1998: doctoral research in the Department of Educational Science, funded by a scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation; doctoral degree awarded in October 1998
- 1998-2001: postdoc in the ‘Biographische Risiken und neue professionelle Herausforderungen’ (Biographical Risks and New Professional Challenges) doctoral research programme
- 2001-2008: researcher (German grade C1), Martin Luther University Halle/Wittenberg
- from June 2008: head of research unit on qualitative and quantitative research methods in educational science, Martin Luther University Halle/Wittenberg
- 2011: Habilitation and award of venia legendi in educational science, with an emphasis on general educational science
