Research Project

The issue of whether children and youth have a sexuality, in what it consists and how society should approach this topic has found itself the subject of heated and sensitive public debate in recent years, but the matter has a longer history. The thorough research into the conceptions and conflicts around this topic that arose during the Enlightenment and in the post-1945 period contrasts sharply with the research lacuna that presents itself for the period in between. My research project will tackle this gap by proposing that it was around 1900 that the modern discourse of “juvenule” sexuality came into being. My intent will be to cast light on societal actors, spaces and processes in connection with the history of this issue and contrast developments in Germany with those in Britain and France.
