Dr Janosch Steuwer

Janosch Steuwer’s primary research interests are in the history of National Socialism and its aftermath, how diary-writing developed and changed in the twentieth century, cooperation among European political parties, the history of childhood since 1970, and the history of the extreme right after 1945. Janosch studied history and political science at the universities of Bochum and Bielefeld, after which he initially held a researcher role at Ruhr University Bochum in a project on the history of the EVZ Foundation (Stiftung Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft, a German foundation whose objectives include remembrance of the victims of National Socialism and the promotion of human rights) and its partner organisations. His doctoral thesis, a study of the social history of National Socialism, was part of a German Research Foundation (DFG) project entitled ‘National Socialism as an Individual and Social Challenge’ (Der Nationalsozialismus als biografische und gesellschaftliche Herausforderung). The thesis received multiple awards and was published by Wallstein as ‘Ein Drittes Reich, wie ich es auffasse’. Politik, Gesellschaft und privates Leben in Tagebüchern 1933-1939. Indiana University Press will publish an English translation in 2022.

Between 2016 and 2020, before joining MLU, Janosch worked at the University of Zürich on research topics including the history of childhood from the 1970s onward and historical research on violence. His current project explores the history of how German society has responded to the extreme right since the 1960s. Janosch sits on the advisory council of the German Archives for Diaries    and co-edits the online magazine Geschichte der Gegenwart   .
